From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Gov. Bill Haslam recently sent a personal letter to U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs David J. Shulkin urging that the Bradley County Veterans Home become a reality “in the near future.”

Early Tuesday morning, Haslam raised the ante on his seriousness about getting the project on the fast track to completion.

In an announcement which the governor’s office authorized to be released by state Rep. Kevin Brooks (R-Cleveland), Haslam has added another $3 million in his Supplemental Budget Amendment, funds to be used solely for the construction of the proposed Tennessee State Veterans Home in Cleveland and Bradley County.

That commitment, included in Haslam’s final, formal budget presentation to the Tennessee General Assembly before his term ends, will bring the state’s financial commitment for the project to $10 million.

Previously, the Cleveland City Council and Bradley County Commission have each approved $2 million for the veterans home. An anonymous donor has guaranteed $3 million for the cause, and the state had already put aside $7 million for the Bradley County facility.

Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland and Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis have been strong advocates for the veterans home, as well as members of the city council and county commission.

From NewsChannel 9…

Starting this week, Bradley County Sheriff’s Deputies will be stationed at the front of Bradley County high schools.

Both Bradley Central and Walker Valley will have three deputies on staff.

In the morning when students are coming into school the deputies will be checking cars and looking for suspicious activity.

After 8:20 AM — when the classes begin — three of the school entrances will close and all visitors must check in with the deputies.

Nat Akiona, the principal of Walker Valley High School says, “This helps identify individuals that shouldn’t be on campus right at the start.”
