Registration is still open for the 65 Roses 5K and Great Strides Walk taking place this Saturday, March 24th, at Lee University. This year, the 18th Annual Cleveland Great Strides Weekend will celebrate crossing the million dollar fundraising milestone as the community raises awareness and money to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis, a chronic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide).

Day of race registration and check-in for the 5K will begin at 7 a.m. in front of the Lee University Paul Conn Student Union. The road race, in partnership with Terra Running Company, will begin at 8:30 a.m. The first 1,000 entries will receive a Boco hat, and all finishers will receive a T-shirt.

Pre-registered runners can pick up race packets Friday, March 23rd, from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. at Terra Running Company.

A 1K Fun Run will take place at 9:15, followed by the road race awards at 9:45 a.m.

The Great Strides walk will begin at 10 a.m., immediately following the 5K race awards. Walk check-in begins at 9 a.m.

Cleveland Great Strides will welcome America’s most decorated distance runner, Meb Keflezighi, to run and speak throughout the weekend, to help commemorate the million dollar achievement.

Overtime pay — and how to pay for it — was among the topics discussed Monday by the Bradley County Commission’s Finance Committee.

The committee approved a transfer of $30,000 from the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office’s Deputy salary line item to the Overtime Pay line item, to help cover overtime pay.

County Commission Chairman Louie Alford asked if the transfer will be used for overtime pay in the jail only, and BCSO Finance Director Cassandra Burgess said it will. She said the BCSO currently has three open positions and two employees retiring soon, so officials are in the process of trying to hire for five positions.

Part of the overtime has been because of maintenance personnel who have been working at night when the jail is “closed down” to install lights, Burgess said.

The Finance Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for noon on Monday, April 2, in the County Mayor’s conference room at the Bradley County Courthouse Annex.

The three candidates interviewed by the Bradley County/Cleveland 911 Director Search Committee were questioned on several topics on Tuesday. Interviewed were Jon Collins, Jerry L. Johnson Jr. and Sherri Maxfield.

The facilitator for the interviews was Cleveland Fire Marshal Ben Atchley, who asked the interview questions. The monitor for the interviews was Andrew Hunt, director of the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library, who was present to make sure the same questions were asked of each candidate in the same way.

The full list of questions, as well as candidates answers, are part of a three-part series being published by the Cleveland Daily Banner.
