From the Chattanoogan…

TDOT officials said Tuesday they believe that an oversize load caused a frightening bridge collapse at the busy intersection of I-24 and I-75.

One person was injured when a beam fell shortly before noon on Monday. Hospital officials said that person was in critical condition. TDOT officials said that driver apparently ran into the beam after it fell.

TDOT is drawing up plans to get a side barrier again on the bridge and be able to open it for two lanes. The lanes will be narrower than they were before because the collapsed beam is not being replaced.

TDOT Chief Engineer Paul Degges said an examination of the collapsed beam showed that five different steel strands had been cut in the same area of each strand.

The beam has 23 3/8 inch steel strands in all.

Mr. Degges said the collision with the bridge may have happened shortly before the fall, or it could have been as much as three days earlier. He said it was likely the top of whatever struck the bridge was made of steel.

He said TDOT cameras in that intersection are for traffic monitoring and not for investigative purposes, therefore they do not record.

Lee University’s School of Nursing was ranked #1 in Tennessee by registerednursing.org for its third Annual RN Program Rankings 2019 Edition.

Lee’s nursing program began in 2014 and has grown rapidly to include almost 400 students. The program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Forty-four Tennessee schools were analyzed, and the top 20 qualified forregisterednursing.org’s ranking. One qualification for this ranking is that the program must offer an Associate in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or Direct-Entry Master of Science in Nursing Degree. Of the programs ranked by registerednursing.org, Lee’s School of Nursing is the only nursing program in Tennessee, and the Southeast, with an averaged 100 percent passing rate.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Larry Bowers reports: Volunteer Energy Cooperative is planning system upgrades to offset the degradation of equipment at TVA’s East Cleveland Substation.

The Tennessee Valley Authority recently contacted VEC officials concerning the apparent end of life of equipment at the substation.

That communique, in particular, stressed the fact the equipment has been in operation for more than 50 years, and is beginning to show signs of that use. Consequently, there is now a high risk of failure.

With this information in hand, VEC has decided to construct a new transmission circuit along the U.S. 411 Highway corridor, between the Benton and the Ocoee Substations.

Also, VEC will also be constructing additional circuits and upgrading facilities in Bradley County. It will also be shifting the load away from the East Cleveland Substation.

Areas that will be affected by this work includes South Polk County (the Ocoee community), South Bradley County (the McDonald area), North Cleveland (around Tasso), and Riceville, in McMinn County.

Meanwhile, TVA has brought in a portable transformer that can be utilized if the East Cleveland equipment failure were to happen.
