Autumn Hughes reports: The demolition of three schools no longer used by Bradley County was the main topic of discussion when the Bradley County Commission’s Building and Land Committee met Monday.

Commissioners discussed multiple issues and options revolving around the remaining buildings at the former McDonald and Waterville elementary schools, and Lake Forest Middle School.

Commissioner Dennis Epperson said he believes demolition of the buildings at Lake Forest should be the third priority in the list of old school buildings to be taken down.

Epperson said he believes the priority for taking down old school buildings should be McDonald Elementary School in the 2019-20 fiscal year; old Waterville Elementary School in the 2020-21 fiscal year; and old Lake Forest Middle School in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

Epperson added he thinks McDonald has the most liability.

Ultimately, the committee voted to authorize County Mayor D. Gary Davis to put the Lake Forest demolition project out for bid. The motion passed with Epperson voting against it.

Chattanooga firefighters are investigating a reported fire at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute on Wednesday.

The fire was reported shortly after 5:00 p.m.

Fire department spokesperson Bruce Garner says the sprinkler system extinguished the flames before fire crews arrived at the scene.

Garner says the fire started in a patient’s room. No injuries have been reported. Garner says the incident caused more water damage to the facility than fire damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
