From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Better safe than sorry.

That was what several in the local region were saying as the severe weather that had been predicted to strike Bradley County and Southeast Tennessee on Wednesday and Wednesday night did not occur. That didn’t mean local emergency responders were not prepared.

An early wave of bad weather was predicted for around 2 p.m. to the west of Bradley County, and to strike this area as early as 4 p.m. This led both school systems to dismiss early, as there would be buses on the roads at 4 p.m. had they kept to their regular schedules.

Bradley County government offices closed at 4 p.m. on Wednesday to allow employees to get a head start on their way home.

Forecasters said there was even a chance of tornado activity striking the area, with the NWS saying there was the potential for the weather to rival that of previous years’ tornado activity.

Cleveland/Bradley County Emergency Management director Troy Spence said that the EOC received no reports of any home damages. The winds, however, did take down some tree limbs, and caution was suggested for motorists not only during the rains and winds, but early this morning as they might come upon a blockage in the road.

While East Tennessee was spared from the most severe weather, the entire state was not. There were reports of a possible tornado destroying a mobile home in Warren County, with one person injured, according to the National Weather Service. The Shelbyville area was also struck by the severe weather, with several roofs being damaged and debris scattered over portions of that area.

Last year’s events were successful yielding hundreds of residents attending to safely dispose of household items. This year’s event sponsors are Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, Santek Waste Service, LLC., Bradley County Government, Cleveland/Bradley Keep America Beautiful, and Cleveland Utilities.

Anybody needing information regarding this event should contact Lt. Tim Mason in the Public Safety Unit at 423-728-7315.

The Cleveland Daily Banner reports…

The city of Cleveland has jumped to the top of another national economic chart, this time with the projection it will be one of the nation’s most successful (thriving) midsized municipalities during 2017.

The city has already been selected as the No. 1 community in the nation in jobs growth, and among national leaders among communities where people are considering a change of residence, affordable living, and an opportunistic job market.

The community’s industrial growth with Wacker, Whirlpool, and Amazon (and the soon-to-be-open Spring Branch Industrial Park south of Cleveland) have all contributed to a Kiplinger Newsletter report that lists Cleveland among the top 11 mid-range communities expected to thrive in 2017.

Cleveland is the only Tennessee city on the top-11 list. Joining Cleveland are St. George, Utah; Bend/Redmond, Ore.; Prescott/Prescott Valley, Ariz; Savannah, Ga.; Reno/Sparks, Nev.; Athens, Ga.; College Station/Bryan, Texas; Salem, Ore.; Boise, Idaho; and Spokane, Wash.
