Cleveland City School Board meeting recap

The Cleveland City School Board met yesterday.   During the meeting, Board members went over important dates for the rest of the school

The Cleveland City School Board met yesterday.

During the meeting, Board members went over important dates for the rest of the school year. Cleveland High School’s graduation ceremony is set for May 10th at 6:00 PM. Students will not attend school on May 10th and 17th, as those days are designated as Professional Development days for teachers.

The Cleveland City School’s academic year will conclude with an abbreviated day on May 24th, offering a brief wrap-up before summer break.

Also during the meeting, School Board members discussed the Arming Teachers Bill recently passed by the state legislature. Although the school system has already stated it will not participate in arming teachers at this time, some of the details of the bill were discussed. For a teacher to legally carry a firearm, approval must be granted by the Director of Schools, Chief of the CPD, and the school’s principal. Teachers must also pass rigorous background and psychological checks, hold an enhanced carry permit, and complete additional law enforcement training. At this time, the priority remains with specially trained School Resource Officers as the preferred security measure.

In budget discussions, the board said the priorities for the 2024-2025 budget include salary increases of 5% for full-time and most part-time staff and the addition of new positions in the areas of ESL and special education.

The proposal also raises part-time bus drivers’ pay to $28/hr and provides supplemental pay for an Athletic Trainer at the high school.

The Budget proposal passed unanimously.

Additionally, the board is nearing the end of its search for the next Director of Schools. Final interviews were concluded last week, and the board will convene today May 7th, for a work session at 3:00 PM followed by a special meeting at 5:30 PM to vote on the appointment of Director of Schools.
