Topping our news today…

The 10th Judicial District Drug Task Force and the Cleveland Police Department conducted a joint operation in Cleveland. As a result of this operation, agents served a search warrant on a local residence and located approximately 150 grams of heroin.  Calvin George Evans, age 37, of 19312 Prevost St. Detroit Michigan was arrested for Possession of Schedule 1 for Resale and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He is currently in the Bradley County Jail.

Also in news today…

The Cleveland City Council said goodbye to Mayor Tom Rowland. Rowland, Mayor since 1991, presided over his final City Council meeting on Monday. It was also the final City Council meeting for Richard Banks. Banks served for 14 years. Both the mayor and councilman Banks were presented with crystal gavels by the Council.

New city councilman Ken Webb will replace Banks on the cities governing body beginning next month. New mayor Kevin Brooks will also take the oath of office on September 10th.

The Cleveland city Council re-appointed city Judge Barrett Painter to a new two-year term. It was also announced at the Cleveland City Council meeting that the Cleveland Police Department has been reaccredited for a new four-year term.

Additionally…

The Bradley County Commission said goodbye to several members last night. Those commissioners having their final meeting were Dan Rawls, Robert Rominger, Mark Hall, and Terry Caywood.

The new commissioners are Tim Mason, Erica Davis, Kevin Raper, and Dennis Epperson. The new commissioners will be sworn in during a public ceremony Tuesday, September 4th, at 9am on the Courthouse Square.

A Cleveland native who was on a skydiving expedition died, along with three others, in a fiery plane crash Saturday in Swainsboro, Ga.

Justin Duff, 42, of Statesboro, Ga., and formerly of Cleveland, was killed when the 1988 single-engine Cessna crashed around 2 p.m., according to news media reports.

Duff was a 1997 graduate of Bradley Central High School, where he was a catcher for the baseball team. His Facebook page lists his occupation as a senior rigger at the skydiving school.

The crash occurred at East Georgia Regional Airport in Swainsboro. The four dead, as well as a surviving passenger, were from The Jumping Place Skydiving Center in Statesboro.

The surviving passenger, William Middlebrooks, remains in critical condition at Augusta Medical Center.

The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating.
