The County Commission met last night for a voting session, however, the only agenda item was pulled for further discussion.

During the meeting, several commissioners voiced concerns over the SPCA removing Commissioner Gilbert from their Board.

4th District Commissioner Howard Thompson expressed his concern and asked Cheryl Dunson, an SPCA board member, to address the Commission on the decision. Runs on cited bylaws emphasizing the importance of loyalty and adherence to organizational guidelines as the reasons Gilbert was voted off the board.

Thompson expressed his concern that a board member should not be removed because they have a difference of opinion or how they cast a vote as a County Commissioner.

7th District Commissioner, Bill Winters also expressed concern and said quote “We as commissioners have pretty thick skin. But when one of our fellow commissioners is vilified for acting on what he thought he should do on this side of the table, it’s tough for us to see. But I do know there’s expected respect on both sides.”

3rd District Commissioner Milan Blake added to next week’s work session Agenda a proposal from the Finance Committee to approve a $15.1 million addition to Hopewell Elementary School.

The County Commission will next meet on May 13th at noon. You can watch yesterday’s meeting at mixtv.tv
