Police have arrested protesters who blocked a street near the Tennessee Capitol as they called for gun control, changes to the military system and other social justice measures.
The Tennessee Poor People’s Campaign protest Tuesday happened a few blocks from where President Donald Trump was slated to speak several hours later in Nashville. The protest was similar to ones the group held the last two weeks near the Capitol.
Several people laid down in the roadway as city police surrounded them, telling them on a megaphone that they would be arrested if they didn’t stop blocking the road. The group read off demands to help poor people.
The group said it expected more than 20 people to be arrested. Police did not immediately release a number of arrests.

A man who was cuffed, cussed and curtailed from recording a Bradley County Sheriff’s Office traffic stop in April said Sunday he’s glad to hear two officers involved in the incident have been disciplined.
The incident happened April 8 at the Harry’s gas station on Dalton Pike, as Jermichael Parks used his cousin Terrell Parks’ phone to record officers questioning family members and searching their truck at the gas pumps.
Parks recorded Deputy Dale Liner ordering him to stop filming and hand over the phone. Liner grabbed the phone and then took Parks into custody, threatening to “break his arms” if he didn’t put his hands behind his back for the cuffs. The Parks cousins said Liner also confronted Terrell, chest-bumping him, using obscenities, calling him names and threatening him with jail.
While this was going on, then-Lt. Tom Wasson’s body mic recorded him threatening to arrest Jamichael Parks for disorderly conduct and making a false claim it was illegal to film police.
Jamichael Parks was uncuffed and allowed to leave after being detained for 20 to 25 minutes. The four people in the truck were not charged either.
Parks filed a complaint about the officers’ behavior. An internal affairs investigation obtained by the Times Free Press contradicts Liner’s claim that the cousins were intruding into the traffic stop scene and behaving threateningly.
The report said the statements were “not professional in tone and reflected poorly on the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.”
The investigators sustained a finding of conduct unbecoming an officer against Wasson. He was busted from lieutenant to sergeant, with a $233-per-pay-period salary reduction. He also is required to attend training on the Fourth Amendment and write a report on how the incident violated Jamichael Parks’ constitutional rights.
Findings were sustained against Liner related to conduct in arresting and dealing with law violators, and for use of profanity. Liner was given a 10-day suspension.

Tennessee State Parks will celebrate National Trails Day and kick off Great Outdoors Month with free, guided hikes at all 56 parks on Saturday, June 2.
The variety of events includes ranger-led day hikes, night hikes, history hikes, nature hikes and trail cleanup hikes. With more than 1,000 miles to explore, ranging from easy, paved trails to rugged backcountry trails to scenic waterways, there is something for everyone.

Calling at the next logical step in securing Bradley County schools, head of security Scott Hernandez, proposed magnetic locks where teachers could lock their doors from inside the classroom to the Bradley County commission at their work session last night.
The estimated cost is $250,000. Director of Bradley County schools Dr. Linda cash echoed Hernandez’s proposal and talked about being proactive instead of reactive. A camera system was also discussed, something the security plan calls for in the future. Last nights presentation to the Bradley County commission was the first step in the security proposal, as more information is gathered. No vote was scheduled on the proposal.
