Following discussion Monday night, the Bradley County Commission is taking a closer look at the duties and responsibilities of the commission chairman.
Commissioners were presented with a copy of the Bradley County Commission Rules of Procedure during their work session. Commissioner Charlotte Peak said she asked for the information regarding the chairperson’s responsibilities because she wants everyone to be aware of what those responsibilities are. She noted that Commission Chairman Louie Alford “goes above and beyond” in the position he’s held for the past 10 years.
Peak said that if any commissioners want to lobby to be named chairman, she thinks they actually need to work for it, rather than simply feel “entitled” or “deserve” to serve as chairman.
She added that her fellow commissioners need to think about changing the requirements for the chairman position. Peak said she is working on a resolution to make changes and is planning a work session to discuss what changes to make.
For example, Peak said that term limits for the chairman position would create opportunity and diversity in that role; her recommendation is to vote for a vice chairman every year and for that person to move up to chairman the next year. She said such a move would “give status” to the vice chairmanship. Also, Peak said diversity would encourage more communication and cooperation with City of Cleveland officials, too.
Peak said she would like input from the other commissioners on this matter.
Chairman Alford said he has no problem with the discussion.

Chattanooga Police are looking for a missing 18-year-old woman, who they say is endangered.
Elizabeth McClure was last seen Tuesday evening at Erlanger, while waiting for a doctor’s appointment.
According to police, McClure should be considered endangered due to her mental capacity.
Family members are very concerned. They say McClure has severe mental health issues and functions like an 8 to 12 year old.
She is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet 1 inch tall, 118 pounds, with brown shoulder length hair and brown eyes.

Officials with the Erlanger Health System released an artistic rendering of their proposed Level IV Trauma Center in Bradley County, along with further details about the new freestanding emergency center.
The proposed site is located at Exit 20 off I-75 and US 64, 27 miles from the downtown Erlanger Medical Center and Children’s Hospital campuses.
The Tennessee Health Services and Development Agency will hear Erlanger’s proposal in Nashville on June 27.
Plans include support facilities for EMS personnel and an ambulance park, 12 exam rooms, including trauma facilities, observation beds for monitoring patients, a cardiac catheterization suite with observation beds, CT scanner and catheterization laboratory, imaging equipment, lab and pharmacy services and a helipad.
The new facility would be certified to treat both adults and children and serve as the only Level IV trauma center serving both Bradley and Polk counties.
