Topping our news today…

The hearing to debate constitutional questions regarding the charges against Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson will be held today in a Bradley County court. Watson’s attorney, James Logan, has filed a motion to dismiss the charges against Watson due to lack of constitutionality. The argument was made that the state had not presented any evidence Watson violated state law, or had fraudulent intent. Logan expressed that the law only concerns titles issued by the State of Tennessee itself, or a county clerk’s office. The titles in question were not issued in Tennessee. Logan also maintained that the law under which his client has been charged is too undefined, and thus is not constitutional. It also fails to include a required element of the crime.

Mix 104.1 and Talk 101.3 The Buzz will cover Sheriff Watson’s court hearing this morning live on Talk 101.3 The Buzz, as well as on our Facebook page with live video at Mix 104.1 WCLE on Facebook.

We are expecting the hearing to take place around 11 AM this morning.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Construction is progressing on the new Candy’s Creek Cherokee Elementary School being built off of Highway 60 between Paul Huff Parkway and Gregory Lane.

Members of the Cleveland Board of Education and city officials toured the construction site Monday to see the progress so far.

Hal Taylor, director of operations for the school system, showed off the site and said he is happy with how things are going now.

Candy’s Creek Cherokee Elementary School, the name of which is spelled to pay homage to a historic Cherokee school, will be a single-story building spanning some 95,700 square feet.

The building, which is being built by J&J Contractors, is set for a March 2019 completion date, with students starting classes there the following August.

Those wanting to live a healthier life in 2018 don’t have to wait long to get started on their resolutions and can do so while avoiding the sweaty confines of the gym.

Tennessee and Georgia will join state parks across the country in First Day hikes. All 50 states will once again participate, offering free, guided hikes on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Fifty-five state parks in Tennessee will participate, and hikes will range from less-strenuous one-mile hikes to longer, more grueling excursions for experienced hikers. Participating sites stretch from as far west as T.O. Fuller State Park near the Tennessee/Arkansas border and as far east as Roan Mountain State Park near the state’s border with North Carolina.

Participating locations in the state within an hour of Chattanooga include Harrison Bay State Park, Booker T. Washington State Park, Red Clay State Historic Park, Hiwassee/Ocoee State Scenic River State Park, South Cumberland State Park and Fall Creek Falls State Park.

Other nearby locations in Georgia include Fort Mountain State Park, Rocky Mountain Recreation & Public Fishing Area and James H. Floyd State Park.

Those in the area wanting to truly bring in the new year with a hike can do so with a midnight hike at Harrison Bay State Park. The hike will begin at 11 p.m. on the Harrison Bay Star Walk Trial.
