Topping our news today…

Lee University has canceled its spring graduation scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1. President Dr. Paul Conn said the decision was both difficult and made “with tears, literally, at times.” The university leadership came to a conclusion to cancel graduation after meetings with Lee’s chairman of the Board of Directors, as well as its eight vice presidents and a number of faculty leaders, Conn explained.

From NewsChannel 9…

The Cleveland, Tennessee company making the masks distributed for free by the state has confirmed 18 employees have tested positive for COVID-19.

Renfro Corporation says they have a total of 326 employees at the Cleveland facility.

Todd Roeder, Renfro’s Vice President of Quality & Compliance, tells us that of the 18 employees who have tested positive to date, each are in different stages of home isolation and quarantine since their first positive case in early June.

  • Six have finished their 14-day quarantine and are waiting follow-up test results before coming back to work
  • Another six will complete their 14-day quarantine this week or early next week
  • Six other employees are in their first week of home isolation

Roeder said in a statement that the company has required employees to wear face coverings as well as stay socially distant from other workers.

From Fox17 Nashville…

As a mother of four, Tennessee Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Piercey said she plans to send her kids back to school in less than a month. For her children, switching from traditional to virtual learning is not just apples to apples.

Like many Tennessee parents, Dr. Piercey works hours away from her home. She believes it’s “almost inevitable” that COVID-19 will creep into schools, so this school year is about predictability for her.

Personally, Dr. Piercey wants schools to closely work with local health officials when addressing the possible spread of the virus while also keeping parents informed.

Department of Education officials have now joined the governor’s Unified Command Group for planning purposes. The governor said information on how to respond to the virus in schools is expected to be shared before school begins. Find a list of back to school announcements from school districts here.
