Topping our news today…

Bradley County and Cleveland City Schools will be closed on Monday, August 21, 2017, due to the solar eclipse taking place that afternoon. Both school systems want to give families the opportunity to share this experience together as well as keeping the safety of their students at the forefront of their decision. It is estimated that there will be 400,000 to 1,000,000 people visiting Tennessee for the total eclipse. The increased traffic will cause considerable congestion on our roads which may put our families at risk.

Teachers in both school systems will provide lessons for students regarding the eclipse. Glasses that when worn properly meet the transmission requirements to view the eclipse without injuring the eyes were provided by Check into Cash. The glasses will be sent home on Friday, August 18th .

As a reminder, Cleveland is in the path of totality. A partial eclipse will begin at 1:03 pm and end at 3:58 pm. Totality begins at 2:33 pm. All outside practices will be halted between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00.

An update on a previous story…

“Top 10 Most Wanted” fugitive Travis Grissom, who led patrol

deputies on a chase after stealing a vehicle from Love’s Truck Stop in Charleston, TN

last June, was finally captured on Saturday, July 29, 2017

Grissom was spotted by a patrol deputy driving southbound on I-75 in a blue Dodge Ram near the Bradley / McMinn County line. When a traffic stop was initiated, the vehicle accelerated to at least 80 M.P.H. in an attempt to evade. During those attempts, the vehicle changed lanes cutting between a semi-truck and other vehicles, drove in the emergency lane of the interstate before exiting the interstate at the 33 mile marker, and traveled through a red light at the intersection of Lauderdale Memorial and the I-75 Southbound exit ramp. The driver’s continuous efforts to evade almost caused two separate collisions with the vehicle proceeding northbound on I-75 in two lanes at the same time.

Further investigation yielded the tag on the Dodge Ram didn’t belong to the vehicle and had been stolen from Morgan County, TN. Additionally, deputies located drugs and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

The Polk County Commission voted Monday night to set the county budget and to raise property taxes by 12 cents.

The new property tax rate is now set at .25221 per $100 of assessed property value.

Budget Chairman Wendall “Buster” Lewis said the increase is the first in recent years.

“We have actually reduced the rate a couple of times over the years,” Lewis said. “This won’t be a large increase. The increase on a $150,000 house will probably be around $20.”

Commissioner Greg Brooks said commissioners had no choice.

“This was done as a pre-emptive move before we found ourselves in the position of having the state come in next year and setting the rate,” Brooks said. “If they do it, it would be a much higher increase.”
