From NewsChannel 9: A Tennessee man who shot and killed his father, cut up his corpse, and then tried to bury the remains in the mountains has pleaded guilty to the crime.

John Scott Ball, 47, of Etowah entered his plea in Polk County on Monday, according to District Attorney Shari Tayloe.

In May 2022, two hikers looking for ginseng on Old Furnace Road in Monroe County, Tennessee noticed a foot sticking out of the dirt. They uncovered the partially buried remains of John H. Ball, which were in 11 separate pieces.

An autopsy revealed John H. Ball died from a gunshot wound to the head, sometime in early 2022. Authorities in McMinn County arrested his son a short while later.

Polk County Sheriff Steve Ross says after his arrest, “When they went to talk to the son before they even told him what had happened, he mentioned inconsistent statements that flew up some red flags.”

After his guilty plea, a judge sentenced John Scott Ball to life in prison.
