Cleveland High School senior Brian Byerly has been selected as a nominee for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program. Each Tennessee high school could nominate a maximum of two seniors to be considered as a state finalist. Nominees were selected based on academic achievement, leadership skills, community involvement, overcoming obstacles, and strong writing skills. As one of 20 state finalists, Brian will compete for the national level; the U.S. Department of Education will announce the two winners from each state in February 2018. A National Merit Semi-Finalist and AP Scholar with Distinction, Brian serves as the Student Liaison to the Board of Education and runs on the CHS Cross Country and Track teams. Autumn O’Bryan, Principal of CHS, said the school is very proud of Brian. She also said he has taken advantage of their most rigorous courses to prepare for advanced study after high school, and she is certain this is one of many recognitions he will receive this year.

Five days remain for Bradley County taxpayers who want to sign up for the partial payment program offered through the Trustee’s Office; at least, for the current calendar year.
A second enrollment period for 2018 property taxes will be offered beginning Wednesday, Jan. 3, and will continue through Friday, Feb. 9.
But for those wishing to make the commitment now, the first signup period — which started in late October — will conclude Friday at 5 p.m., according to Mike Smith, Bradley County trustee.
For Bradley County taxpayers signing up for a monthly installment under the partial payment plan, here’s how it works: For example, if a parcel’s lump-sum annual payment is $500, the number would be divided by 12, meaning the taxpayer would owe about $42 per month.
Most types of payment are accepted for the partial payment plan: Check, cash, credit card, debit card and in some cases automatic withdrawal. Details are available by visiting the Trustee’s Office at its temporary location in the former SouthEast Bank building at the corner of 17th and Keith streets.

Charges have been dropped against a Whitfield County coach accused of failing to report suspected child abuse.
District Attorney Bert Poston says the charges against Northwest High School coach Lamar Cofield were dropped because Georgia’s mandatory reporter law says the person being reported must be a student and can’t be outside of the school.
Cofield was charged after a student said she was sexually assaulted by another student while at an off-campus party that the Sheriff’s Office says Cofield attended in July.
Investigators also charged 33-year-old Ashley Turner with furnishing alcohol to persons under the age of 21.
