Cleveland police and firefighters were called to Walmart Monday for a child that was left alone in a hot van.

Police spokeswoman Evie West tells Channel 3, the child was left in the van for about 20 minutes while the temperature was about 93 degrees outside.

West says firefighters broke the window of the van to save the child.

Police had the mother paged by the staff at Walmart. West says the mother told officers that she forgot her child was in the van when she went into the store.

West says police reported the incident to the Department of Children’s Services.

At this time, no charges have been filed against the mother.

Scrutiny of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office’s finances tightened a couple of notches Monday when county commissioners voted to move forward with a forensic audit and take a closer look at the department’s surplus property disposal.

The five-member Finance Committee unanimously approved Commissioner Thomas Crye’s motion to form an ad hoc committee that will define the audit’s scope and cost and report back by Sept. 11. Unlike the county’s regular annual audit, a forensic audit would look specifically for evidence of financial wrongdoing. The specially formed group would comprise three commissioners and the county attorney.

Persistent allegations of credit card misuse, missing money and other problems in the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office sparked an investigation by the Tennessee Department of Investigation that is now in its 14th month.

The Cleveland Bradley County Public Library History Branch is in the midst of a major renovation project on the second floor.

Once the project is finished, the second floor will serve as the new home for the Bradley Cleveland Public Education Foundation.

The project was estimated to take 90 days, and a month in, the contractor, Jenkins Contracting, says that things are moving along.

One of the biggest challenges faced has been the removal of old lead-based paint from the floors, which led to another contractor being brought in for the EPA-approved paint removal process.

Included in the renovation is work on the flooring, repairs to the walls and ceilings, as well as updating the electrical systems and plumbing. Wifi access points have also been added to the second floor.

Maintaining the historical feel and atmosphere of the space has been of the utmost importance for the renovation project, and the craftsmanship of the laborers, even down to the plaster and molding processes, has been very impressive.
