From the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

Higher traffic at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is spurring officials to consider expanding the passenger concourse and boosting parking, and they’re pursuing seasonal nonstops to Destin, Fla.

Also, the record passenger boardings at Lovell Field have helped earn airport chief Terry Hart a new six-year deal.

Hart said boardings have climbed 19.23 percent in the first seven months of 2017 compared with the same period a year ago as the airport heads for another all-time annual high for a fourth consecutive year.

He cited competitive fares as the No. 1 reason followed by the convenience of flying out of Chattanooga rather than driving to another airport to travel.

The airport CEO said an Airport Authority retreat this week will look at the potential of expanding the facility, including adding gates and passenger services to the concourse after they pass through the security checkpoint. Also, they’ll look at creating more automobile parking next to the terminal.

A new long-range master plan now under study will set future traffic marks, he said, and hitting those would spur the expansions.

Meanwhile, Hart said discount carrier Allegiant Air is considering starting nonstop service between Chattanooga and Destin, Fla., next summer.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Cleveland building permits for July totaled almost $20 million, according to information released by the city’s planning office.

Two major permits are for construction of facilities, including an $8.4 million permit issued to Tri-Con Construction Company for the building of Legacy Village, a retirement center, on Candies Lane in northwest Cleveland.

There was also a permit issued to Hickory Construction Company for the city of Cleveland’s new fire station No. 6 at 2200 Westland Drive, a $2,111,070 project. The new fire hall will serve the south side of the city, including the new Spring Branch Industrial Park.

There was a $2 million permit issued to Perry Stone for construction of a log home conference facility on Urbane Road N.E.

The job cost for the month was $18,342,786.15, with permit fees of $48,800.

From the Daily Post Athenian…

Thousands of visitors traveled for hours and even days to view less than three minutes of a “once-in-a-lifetime” occurrence.

The total solar eclipse which stretched from Oregon to South Carolina brought visitors from as far as Australia and Poland to McMinn County Monday as the path of totality passed over the area. Visitors crowded events in Athens, Etowah and Niota throughout the day to catch a glimpse of the solar phenomenon.

While traffic backups occurred on Interstate 75 northbound and southbound at Exit 49 in Athens and similar backups were noted on Highway 11 in Riceville and Highway 411 in Etowah, McMinn County Emergency Management Agency Director Tom Trotter said no major incidents occurred.

People not only traveled by land to view the eclipse in McMinn County, but by air, as well.

Around 100 planes traveled to the McMinn County Airport from locations throughout the Midwest and Southeast, according to Airport Manager Kristy Gentry Cox. She noted a charter of 27 people came from Bangor, Maine, and the furthest plane from the south came from Boca Raton, Florida.
