From Local 3 News: A new report recommends the Tennessee Department of Transportation study a proposed passenger rail project from Nashville to Chattanooga and from Chattanooga to Atlanta.

The Intercity Passenger Rail and Mobility Study conducted by The Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations ranked the project as the top rail proposal to address traffic congestion.

The report asks TDOT to conduct a study to assess the technical and engineering details of the project. The report reads in part, “the state would almost certainly have to subsidize any new passenger rail service through capital investment and ongoing operating cost support, but the cost to taxpayers of establishing and operating service on any given rail corridor cannot be known without more detailed engineering and technical assessment.”

The report goes on to suggest that the state apply for federal funding available to support such studies.

Other rail projects mentioned are

Chattanooga to Knoxville, Knoxville to Bristol, as well as Nashville to Memphis.
