From The Herald-News: Rhea County children will soon have a new park to call their own after officials with the City of Dayton and BlueCross/BlueShield broke on a soon-to-be totally renovated and upgraded Pendergrass Park.

Located on Main Street across from the Rhea County Welcome Center, Pendergrass Park was selected as the recipient of a $4 million BlueCross Healthy Place grant that will fund a total renovation of the park.

“The City of Dayton is excited about the BlueCross Healthy Place at Pendergrass Park, and we are looking forward to the addition of new equipment and improvements to the space,” Dayton Mayor Hurley Marsh said. “It will be great to have an inclusive and accessible facility here in Dayton that everyone can enjoy.”

“We are excited to partner with the City of Dayton on the revitalization of Pendergrass Park, and we look forward to adding new amenities to this popular space that will encourage even more residents to visit,” said Keith King, manager of the BlueCross Healthy Place Program.

The new features will include accessible play areas for ages 2 through 5 and 5 through 12, a splash pad, fitness area, pavilions, benches, restrooms and a walking track.

The two play areas will be fully accessible for children of all abilities with ramp access on the 5-12 playground, ground-level play activities throughout and poured rubber surfacing.

The splash pad at the BlueCross Healthy Place at Pendergrass Park will be a summer destination to cool off and play. It will feature ground-level sprayers and an impressive “Massive Splash.” The area and its features will be accessible to visitors of all abilities.
