From The Herald-News: A tail light violation landed a Rhea County man behind bars for methamphetamine possession after he was pulled over in a routine traffic stop, according to an arrest report on file with the Rhea County Sheriff’s Department.

Gregory Eugene Capps, 32, of Rhea County, is facing charges related to a routine traffic stop in late January after being pulled over for a car-light violation, the report states.

“On Thursday, Jan. 25, at around 11 p.m., I observed an early 2000 black Volvo traveling east on Hiwassee Highway from Highway 27, emitting white light from the rear of the vehicle,” Rhea County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Hunter Flory said.

Flory said he ran the vehicle’s registration, but it returned through dispatch to a 2018 Jeep Cherokee.

“I initiated a stop on the vehicle at Hiwassee Highway and Abel Drive and made contact with the driver, identified as Gregory Capps,” Flory said.

Flory said that Capps exhibited “nervous behavior” and that after checking Capps’ identification with central dispatch, it was found that Capps had an active warrant for his arrest for violation of probation.

Flory claims that he received consent to search Capps’ vehicle in which he allegedly located “a black magnetic key box in the center console, containing a crystal-like substance weighing approximately 1 gram.”

According to the arrest report, Capps was charged with the manufacture, delivery or sale of a Schedule II controlled substance, driving on a suspended license and violation of probation. According to jail records, he was still incarcerated as of press time Friday.
