Tim Siniard reports Cleveland Mayor Kevin Brooks has lauded Friday’s announcement by Mars Wrigley Confectionary of a $142 million investment in the company’s 40-year-old local plant on Peerless Road.
The expansion will lead to 79 new full-times jobs, and it will position the Cleveland facility to be the only Mars Wrigley Confectionary plant corporate-wide to produce the latest addition to the product line of the iconic M&M’s candy.
The investment will support manufacturing of the company’s new Hazelnut Spread M&M’s, which will be filled with a hazelnut-filled soft center, similar to M&M’s Caramel candy. Mars officials on Friday said they expect to invest millions of dollars more in its U.S. supply chain and manufacturing in the coming years.
The plant expansion reportedly will push the Mars Wrigley workforce at the Cleveland plant to more than 800.

Halloween is just around the corner and with it comes Cleveland’s largest and much anticipated event, the 31st annual downtown Halloween Block Party set for Wednesday, Oct. 31, beginning at 5 p.m. The evening is packed full of Halloween treats, entertainment, and family fun.
Great music is one of the many reasons this event is so popular and this year’s musical lineup delivers from 3 stages. “The Entice Band” headlines the event at 8 p.m. with a two-hour concert. The Entice Band performs Motown, soul and funk classics along with hits of today. The group has been wowing audiences in the Nashville area for over 20 years.
At 6 p.m. local favorite “Bad Tattoo” takes the Courthouse stage. The Back Alley Stage, located behind Craigmiles Hall in the Back Alley Gallery, opens with the Joel Beaver Band beginning at 6 p.m.
Children of all ages enjoy the costume contest at 6 p.m. on the Fun Stage at the Post Office Annex. Sponsored by Mars Chocolate, the Costume Contest includes categories for all ages from infants to adults.
Mars Chocolate sponsors Treat Street which begins at 6 p.m. “Treat Street is a highlight of the evening where thousands of area children are delighted to get a big grocery bag of candy.
Another highlight of the evening is the DARE Midway that is filled with inflatable bounce houses for plenty of bouncing and jumping entertainment. The DARE Midway is located on Broad Street and sponsored by the Cleveland Police Department and Bradley County Sheriff’s Department.

Christy Armstrong reports Construction of Cleveland City Schools’ newest school, Candy’s Creek Cherokee Elementary School, is reportedly going well, despite “one of the wettest Septembers in recent memory.”
Brian Templeton of Upland Design Group gave the Cleveland Board of Education an update during a recent board gathering.
Templeton said most of the effort recently has been getting the building where it can be conditioned. One side of the new building — the side housing a gym and large multipurpose room — is almost ready to be fully climate-controlled. Workers are continuing in other parts of the building to ensure it is fully enclosed.
Templeton said the goal is to be done with this part of the work within 45 days, in time for winter. He added there is much preparation involved in this process, including running wiring.
There were some delays with site work because of the rainy September, but Templeton said the project is still on schedule. It is expected to be done in March 2019 and open its doors to students the following August.
