Topping our news today…

Lee University has sent out the following statement about the ongoing sexual assault investigation:

“Pursuant to the timely notice guidance outlined by the Clery Act, a notice was sent to our campus community Sunday evening regarding an incident that was reported to Campus Security and the Cleveland Police Department.  A sexual assault was reported in one of our campus buildings by one of our students. The incident is under investigation, so progress of that is not open for discussion, but we do not have information that anyone has been apprehended.

The purpose for this notice was to apprise our campus family that this incident had occurred and to let them know that the assailant was still at large, and therefore, to take measures to remain safe and vigilant.

There are many staff whose focus right now is the wellbeing of the victim of this attack.  Likewise there are many others whose only focus has been and will continue to be the ongoing safety of our other students and employees.  Steps are being taken to heighten security across campus and to remind students and staff to be on alert and report suspicious behavior or persons to the authorities.

Our prayers are foremost with this student, but also with others for whom this event will create concern, as it reminds us that because we are in a community where this kind of incident seems rare, we are certainly not immune to it.“

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Christy Armstrong reports Local organization ATS The Bridge is teaming up with the 10th Judicial District Drug Task Force and area law enforcement agencies to host drug take-back events.

Bradley County’s event is Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Colony Square shopping center at 2524 Keith St.

This event will give people a safe way to dispose of unwanted prescription medications. There will also be information available on the dangers of abusing drugs and resources which can help one overcome addiction.

Reba Terry, executive director of The Bridge, said there have been many cases of people rifling through others’ medicine cabinets to find prescription medications they can use recreationally. These have included everyone from teens searching in their own homes to guests searching in friends’ homes during bathroom breaks.

This trend is dangerous, Terry said, because it means more people are gaining access to strong drugs which, if misused, have the potential to cause long-term addiction and drug overdoses.

Terry added Cleveland residents who cannot make these events can turn in unwanted medication at the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office or the Cooke’s Food Store & Pharmacy at 3400 Keith St. N.W. Another take-back event is also being planned for next spring.

Also from The Banner…

A Bradley County Sheriff’s Office employee was reportedly arrested on Friday night and charged with aggravated domestic assault, sexual assault and interfering with an emergency call. Arraignment was scheduled yesterday morning.

According BCSO spokesman Adam Lewis, BCSO corrections officer Cody Carrington is being held at the Bradley County Jail, and has been suspended without pay until the matter is resolved. He is being held in isolation with no bond listed. Carrington was reportedly hired in January 2017.
