From Local 3 News: Governor Bill Lee signed a new state law that allows the overdose-reducing drug Narcan into our schools.

It’s one step leaders say will help in the fight against opioids.

Staff, teachers, and even students will be able to carry the nasal spray version of Narcan on school grounds.

So if an emergency happens, they can save a life.

House Bill 2311 was one both sides could agree on.

“Teens across Tennessee 14 and 19 are the fastest growing category for drug overdoses, said Senator Shane Reeves, Rep. of District 14.

The FDA allowed the nasal spray version to be sold over the counter last year. It’s available at most pharmacies.

“I think a lot of teachers have wanted to have it but weren’t allowed, says Debra Clark Morgan, Hamilton County Regional Overdose Prevention Specialist. I think it will make them feel a little more empowered and not so scared.

Morgan says an accidental dose of Narcan wouldn’t have any side effects.
