From News Channel 9: School may be out for the summer, but the Cleveland Police Department is taking advantage of some empty schools in the area to train School Resource Officers.

They sent 2 SRO’s and a supervisor inside 4 local schools Wednesday.

We couldn’t go inside while they were working, but they did tell us that Cleveland City Schools has at least one SRO at every school.

They also have at least 2 at every middle school and high school.

Since May of 2023, all schools in the state are able to apply for funding for SROs.

This after Governor Bill Lee invested more than $230 million in school safety following the Covenant shooting.

However, a report from February shows that there are still 500 schools in the state that don’t have SROs, despite having access to state funding.

Vince Champion with the International Brotherhood of Police Officers says his son is an SRO.

He believes every school in the state should have at least one SRO per school.

“They’re there for immediate assistance, and then they can also use their radio to get more assistance sent to them quicker than somebody trying to call in,” Champion says.

Other counties, like Hamilton, use district money to supplement school security officers (SSO) who work for the system, and not the sheriffs office.
