The Cleveland City School Board met last night.

The meeting was the last for Dr. Russell Dyer, who has taken a job as the Director of Sumner County Schools.

Board members spent most of the meeting discussing the details of consolidating Cleveland City Schools and Bradley County Schools. The Board’s Legal Council, Chuck Cagle, gave an in-depth presentation on consolidation from a legal standpoint.

After the discussion, the Board voted to pass a resolution against consolidating the two local school systems.

The resolution read in part, “The Mayor and City Council are urged to express their unanimous disinterest in participating in discussions concerning any consolidation effort for Cleveland City Schools and Bradley County Schools. The Mayor and the City Council are urged to reject any invitation to participate in the formation of a unification planning commission established for the purpose of exploring the need for consolidation of Cleveland City Schools and Bradley County Schools.”

The letter was signed by each board member and will be delivered to Mayor Kevin Brooks and the Cleveland City Council.
