Topping our news today…

Bradley County Fire and Rescue professionals have been personally selected by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency to serve as directors of a “Strike Team” that is being sent today to help the people that have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey, in and across Texas. Chief Shawn Fairbanks will choose 2 people, boats and other equipment needed to lead a team of 6 professionals who are trained and extremely proficient in swift water rescue from across our surrounding region. These brave volunteers will leave Bradley County Fire and Rescue’s Downtown station located at 260 Inman Street today for a one week mission. They will travel with their equipment to TEMA, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, headquarters in Nashville to then be sent with other units to help in the continuing mission there to help those in need.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

WCLE is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, but owner Steve Hartline said that it would not have this longevity without being relevant to the community.

Hartline told members of MainStreet Cleveland and visitors to Monday’s meeting that the station began on May 2, 1957, and at the time it went on the air, Cleveland had two radio stations: WCLE and WBAC (which began broadcasting in 1945). He added that the Cleveland Daily Banner was already operating well before the two radio stations came on the air.

When WCLE went on the air, Hartline said that the station was doing its best to be “community-minded.”

He was pinpointing how the station has helped in many endeavors for the community, including the Empty Stocking Fund when began in 1968 by then station-owner Tom Rowland. He noted that 1,500 children were helped at Christmas by the fund and its combination with Brenda Lawson’s Christmas project.

Hartline said that many organizations in Cleveland and Bradley County utilize the station, along with the Banner, in promoting events and fundraising projects within the area. He mentioned that the station received a call Monday from the Central Church of Christ that is raising materials, including food, to take to those affected by Hurricane (now Tropical Storm) Harvey in Texas.

Hartline said the station was going to begin a new morning show segment titled “Tell Me Something Good,” beginning Monday. He said this will involve listeners to the station calling in good things going on in the community.

Some in the audience at the MainStreet Cleveland meeting worked at the station with Hartline, including Kim Currin and present MainStreet Cleveland Executive Director Sharon Marr.

Also from The Banner…

Cleveland High School’s Career and Technical Education program was recently awarded a grant nearing $160,000 from the Tennessee Department of Education.

Following a three-year campaign to increase CTE funding, Education Commissioner Candice McQueen announced the state would be awarding $15 million to help schools purchase new equipment.

The grant awards averaged around $125,000, but Cleveland High will be receiving $159,999. The grant has been split between its mechatronics and health science programs.

CTE supervisor Renny Whittenbarger currently has three purchase orders waiting to be placed, with $6,088 earmarked for diagnostic medicine equipment; $46,463 going toward the purchase of 52 new computers to be split between health sciences and mechatronics; and a $107,447 advanced mechatronics system.

Having already received a donated FANUC robot from Gestamp, Cleveland’s mechatronics students will have the opportunity to learn two more programming languages, Allen Bradley and Siemens.

As soon as the Cleveland CTE purchase plans are approved by the state, the order process will move quickly. The CTE supervisor added that the big, advanced mechatronics system would take around three to four months to reach the high school.
