On the eve of a cold case murder trial in Cleveland, District Attorney General Steve Crump on Monday morning announced that charges were being dismissed against Donnie Ray Brantley in the mysterious death of his wife, Marsha Brantley.
Ms. Brantley disappeared in 2009 and her body has never been found. She was 52 and worked at Lee College (now University).
Crump said Chattanooga attorney Lee Davis had raised issues of territorial jurisdiction and he indicated that Judge Andrew Freiberg appeared to be swayed by the defense argument.
Judge Freiberg told Brantley he was free to go. He had been free on bond.
Crump said the case may not be over and that it has been assigned to the Cold Case Unit. Attorney Davis said he believes his client is innocent, and he said he welcomes the probe by the Cold Case Unit. He said he believes it will come to the same conclusion.

Three witnesses testified Monday at a Criminal Court hearing that county school officials were repeatedly warned about school bus driver Johnthony Walker.
Walker crashed School Bus 366 on Nov. 21, 2016, killing six students and badly injuring others.
He is set to go to trial on 34 charges, including six counts of vehicular homicide, on Feb. 27. The jury is to be selected in Montgomery County on Feb. 24.
Judge Don Poole said he will put down a written ruling on whether the jury will be allowed to hear witnesses speaking of prior driving incidents involving Walker.

Anyone waiting until the last minute to sign up for the partial payment program for 2018 property taxes in Bradley County is rapidly approaching that moment.
Enrollment deadline is Friday, and the last allowable minute is 4:59 p.m.
Bradley County Trustee Mike Smith, who worked with his staff to launch the installment-payment program in 2010, said participant numbers continue to grow. At last report, 1,436 county taxpayers — representing parcels of property — are registered in the program.
The partial payment plan has become a heavily publicized option by the Trustee’s Office because of its unique approach to paying property taxes.
The first payments on 2018 property taxes for partial payment enrollees will be March 15.
Details about the partial payment program, or other tax-related initiatives, can be obtained by visiting the Trustee’s office or by calling 423-728-7248.
Trustee’s Office hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
Two additional tax programs offered by the Trustee’s Office include the tax freeze and tax relief options. Information about each can be obtained by contacting the Trustee’s Office.
The next enrollment period for the partial payment program will begin in November. This signup will be for 2019 property taxes.
