Topping our news today…

A tragic update to our top story yesterday regarding “Lucy”, the missing Bradley County Sheriff’s Office K-9 deputy. Lucy, who was reported missing by her caretakers on Sunday, has been located. During a search with the Chattanooga Police Department and BCSO, Lucy was discovered deceased at approximately 10:19AM Monday morning inside McMinn County along a railroad track. It appears the female K-9 deputy was struck by a train earlier Monday morning.

Lucy, who was a Belgian Malinois, became one of the BCSO’s K-9 units in October 2016, and was presented “Top Dog” during the United States Police Canine Association’s certifications last year. She was known within the BCSO for her speed and was given the nickname of “Pocket Rocket” by personnel at the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Eric Watson released the following statement: ““Our agency is saddened by the tragic death of K-9 Deputy Lucy. She was a great asset to the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, and served this agency well beside her assigned K-9 handler. Our female canine deputy will be buried with full honors, and Faithful Friends has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

I petition the community to pray for Lucy’s K-9 handler, Deputy Chris Shope, during this time who treasured Lucy tremendously.”

The funeral service for Lucy will be held Friday at 11AM at Faithful Friend Pet Crematory. There is currently a memorial book at Faithful Friend Pet Crematory for the community to come by and sign in her memory.

The jury has been selected in Davidson County for the vehicular homicide trial of truck driver Benjamin Brewer.

The jury consists of 13 women and 3 men. Twelve jurors and four alternates will be selected. They will be sequestered during the trial, meaning they won’t have access to television, Internet or news.

Brewer faces six charges in the 2015 crash that claimed the lives of six near the Ooltewah exit on Interstate 75.

The trial is scheduled to begin June 19 in Chattanooga.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

The Bradley County Commission Building and Land committee has given its approval to a proposed land swap between the county and Lee University.

The swap involves a portion of the parking lot at the Cleveland/Bradley Public Library.

County Mayor D. Gary Davis told the committee that “Lee has a need and they are willing to swap something they have for our need.”

“That means swapping some property that the city and county owns,” Davis said. “They can’t do it without the city and county’s blessings.”

The mayor said the city was handling all of the paperwork and the agreement will state that Lee will replace the parking lot.

Library Director Andrew Hunt spoke to the committee along with Cole Strong, Lee vice president of operations.

He said the new parking configuration would include a one-way entrance and one-way exit. Hunt said there would be no loss of parking for the library.

The plan will still need formal approval from both the Cleveland City County and the County Commission.
