The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has fined the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) more than $600,000 and banned one TVA executive from nuclear activities for five years.

This comes after an investigation revealed TVA violated whistleblower protection regulations by disciplining and then firing some nuclear engineers who raised safety concerns about the Watts Bar and Sequoyah nuclear plants.

The civil penalty fine totals $606,942.

The NRC found that TVA’s former vice president of regulatory affairs and former director of corporate nuclear licensing, Joseph Shea, violated the NRC’s employee protection rule and engaged in deliberate misconduct. Shea will be prohibited with any involvement in nuclear activities overseen by the NRC for five years.

The NRC says inspections at the Sequoyah, Watts Bar and Browns Ferry nuclear plants continue to review and assess work environment issues, and says its latest inspections reveal that TVA has made progress in addressing these issues.
