Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department Station 2 will be temporarily out of service due to an accident that occurred Tuesday night.

It happened on Highway 58 around 7:30 p.m., officials said during their monthly training, a firefighter was driving an engine out of the garage when the truck’s side door malfunctioned, opened on its own, and caught the top of the garage door.

The front of the fire station was destroyed forcing service to come to a temporary halt.

Damages to the fire engine and the fire station are unknown at this time. No injuries reported.

Hamilton County Engineering, Risk Management, and Maintenance will be assessing the damage.

Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department will aid the community with emergency fire calls in the area of Birchwood and Georgetown area for Highway 58

A judge has ordered Tennessee election officials to clearly communicate on absentee ballot applications that people can vote by mail if they believe they or someone in their care face a higher risk of COVID-19.

State officials promised the Tennessee Supreme Court this month that they would inform voters about that eligibility, asserting for the first time that underlying health conditions could qualify someone to vote absentee under their plan. Days later, the justices overturned a vote-by-mail option for all eligible voters that Davidson County Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle ordered in June.

In court, the state has described the process as an “honor system” in which voters decide individually if underlying conditions qualify them to vote by mail rather than risk infection at the polls. State lawyers told Lyle that voters can’t be charged with perjury for determining their condition makes them eligible.

The order gives the state until Aug. 31 to change the form, and until Sept. 1 to give county election officials corresponding guidance.

At its regular, Wednesday morning meeting of the Hamilton County Commission, County Mayor Jim Coppinger said the county has accepted a construction company’s bid for the planned expansion of the Silverdale workhouse. Commissioners will give that bid final approval at its meeting next week.

Last month, Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond announced he intends to have the downtown county jail shut down by the end of the year, as his department begins to take over control of Silverdale Detention Center.

CoreCivic, which now owns Silverdale, announced on July 8th that it will soon terminate its contract for Silverdale, for what it said were safety concerns.

At Wednesday’s meeting, Sheriff Hammond says he supports accepting the $20 million bid submitted by Chattanooga-based KTM Builders, and says he plans to make a presentation next week about his department moving out of the Hamilton County Jail and into Silverdale.

Hammond said new additions to Silverdale would include about an extra 45,000 square feet, processing areas, inmate holding area, and secure outdoor recreation areas,
