From News 12: The ongoing unionization efforts at the Volkswagen Plant in Chattanooga have taken a turn.

The United Auto Workers announced their intentions to hold a union vote at the Volkswagen Plant earlier in December.

However, the UAW has filed a complaint against Volkswagen to the National Labor Relations Board.

In a complaint filed to the NLRB, the UAW accuses Volkswagen of the following, quote,

“In the past six months, the employer has violated the Act by threatening, restraining and coercing employees from exercising their rights to engage in protected concerted activity by prohibiting employees from discussing unionization during working time and restricting employees from distributing union materials”.

They say this is a violation of section 8 of the National Labor Relations Act.

Volkswagen Chattanooga did send us a statement in response to these allegations.

They responded quote,

“Volkswagen respects our workers’ right to determine who should represent their interests in the workplace. We are committed to providing clear, transparent, and timely information that helps educate our employees and managers on their legal rights and obligations.mThis is especially important in an atmosphere of deliberate misinformation. We take claims like this very seriously and will investigate accordingly.”

The UAW and VW have a history of conflict since the plant opened up in 2011.

The union has charged on two separate occasions in 2013 and 2016 of similar coercion issues at the plant.

The vote that will be held by the UAW will be the third held at the plant, as the previous two attempts failed.
