Out top story, from the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

A body found on Friday is likely that of 14-year-old Jackson Standefer, who went missing nearly two weeks ago while at the bottom of the canyon during a family trip, according to Grand Canyon National Park officials.

Standefer was crossing a creek on April 15 when he and his step-grandmother, LouAnn Merrell, lost their footing and were swept away. Merrell is the wife of Randy Merrell, the co-founder of the Merrell Boot Co., a popular outdoor footwear maker.

The park said the body was found by a commercial river trip. It was transported by helicopter to the Coconino County (Ariz.) Medical Examiner, which will confirm identification.

The courthouse square was blocked off in downtown Cleveland on Saturday for the annual Relay For Life of Bradley County.

The annual event to raise awareness of cancer in its many forms and donations to fight and end the disease attracted many hundreds of cancer survivors, their families, friends and caregivers.

The Cleveland Fire Department Honor Guard presented the American flag.

Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland greeted the crowd. The mayor said everyone in the large crowd has cancer, survived cancer, is related to someone who has had cancer or has a friend who has faced cancer.

Vendors set up booths around the block where relay teams walked. Musicians and speakers shared a giant stage. Dozens of teams represented area schools, churches and industries.

Mix 104-1 coverage of the Relay For Life was sponsored by Check Into Cash, US Money Shops, and Buy Here Pay Here USA.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

The Bradley County Health Council focused on the effects of tobacco in the county as part of a Tennessee Tobacco Settlement community engagement meeting.

Across the state, tobacco claims at least 30 lives per day and results in $2.67 billion in annual health care costs.

Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, with 70 being known carcinogens.

Bradley County may have seen some improvements in tobacco usage, but there is still work to be done.

In Tennessee, 21.9 percent of adults are tobacco users, while in Bradley County 23 percent of adults are tobacco users.

One positive aspect is the utilization of the Bradley County Quitline. For 2016, 78 tobacco users called the number. That number was a large increase from the 31 callers in 2015 and 12 in 2014.

Through the community engagement program, Amy Davenport and Linda Avila have been tackling issues such as second hand smoke, teenage smoking and of course, pregnancy smoking. Current county statistics show that 17.5 percent of pregnant mothers smoke, which is higher than the state’s 14.3 percent rate. Healthy Tennessee 2020 has a target percentage of 1.4. Currently, tobacco use amongst Tennessee youth is at 31.9 percent. The Healthy People 2020 target is to see that percentage reduced by 10 percent. The program will now be focusing on the prevention of second hand smoke and further examining electronic cigarettes and the health impacts “vaping” can have.

Two weeks have been set aside for the trial of Jody Hughes of Cleveland, who is accused of killing Tyler Worth in 2015.

Hughes, 28, of a Benton Pike address, was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and fabricating/tampering with evidence by the Cleveland Police Department. The CPD was the lead investigating agency as the homicide began in Cleveland.

Hughes was one of five people arrested for the murder of Worth, whose body was found in a ravine in Polk County.

Criminal court officers said that two weeks have been set aside for the trial, which will be in Judge Sandra Doneghy’s court. They said while the two weeks have been set aside for the trial, it could be completed any time during those two weeks.

The court has set aside the two weeks due to the reported numerous amount of witnesses who will testify in the trial. It is not known if one or all four of the other defendants will testify, or if Hughes will take the stand in his own defense.

Until the trial is over and a decision handed down, Hughes will remain incarcerated at the Bradley County Justice Center.
