WACKER’s Charleston, Tennessee site celebrated the company’s Global Sustainability Week Oct. 11-15. Like its sister sites around the globe, WACKER-Charleston contributed to this annual effort with a focus on making a local community impact.

Over the past year, team members without curbside-recycling were encouraged to bring recyclables from home and deposit them in the recycling container on the Charleston site. These efforts resulted in a total of 12,700 pounds of home recyclable materials collected for recycling.

In addition, WACKER team members volunteered to assist with Bradley County’s October 16 Household Hazardous Waste Day, where they contributed to the community’s clean, safe and free-of-charge disposal of electronics, paper, household chemicals and chemical-laden products.

Corporately, WACKER celebrates Sustainability Week during mid-October each year, prior to the universally recognized International Sustainability Day which is celebrated globally on the fourth Wednesday in October (Oct. 27, 2021). WACKER-Charleston has been one of the most active participants in these activities since the site was launched in 2016.

The Bradley County Commission met on Monday covering several items of business. Congratulations were given to the Walker Valley High School band on winning a band competition at Seymour High School this past weekend. Also during the meeting, questions were raised by local constables as to why the Mayor had not included them in the bonuses given to county employees. Further discussion noted that, while the Mayor did have the choice of who is considered a county employee, the commission voted previously to NOT include any elected officials. Constables are considered elected officials, and therefore did not receive the bonus pay.

A special meeting of the Cleveland City Board of Education was held concerning Internet Safety and Technology. During the meeting, a presentation was made on the steps the school system has taken to protect students from harmful online content such as enforcing search filters on and off campus. Using certain products, searches pertaining to suicide or self-harm are tracked and reported to the school or Cleveland Police Department. For repeat offenders, the system can restrict online access to textbooks only. Several parents also discussed concerns about students accessing social media, which led to a unanimous vote by the board to block all social media except YouTube. Snapchat and TikTok had already been blocked. A second meeting was held regarding upcoming projects which are underway, with numerous improvements being made around the school system. Mix 104-1’s Gideon Ratcliff spoke to Director of Schools Dr. Russell Dyer after the meeting.
