In news today…

The Bradley County Board of Education met Thursday night. Director of Schools Dr. Linda Cash gave a report indicating that this week’s return to school has gone well. Rene Diamond, Supervisor of Elementary Education, provided a report on benchmark testing percentages for students. Decline was expected due to students missing time this year. Overall, both math and reading percentages increased in performance. The school board also voted on the 2022-2023 school calendar, which passed. Discussion on the PIE Center’s progress took place, including some savings found in the project as well as a change order that slightly increases the budget. The project is, overall, still under budget and the change order was approved. The plan is to be at a substantial completion point by April 1st.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

A Rhea County man, who was indicted by a Rhea County grand jury in connection with the death of a Bradley County woman, has been transported from a Kansas jail back to Tennessee to await trial.

Guy William O’Connell, 44, was arrested on Aug. 25 in Kansas, and was being held in a jail in Douglas County on a fugitive warrant in connection with the death of Amber Renee Monday, 34.

He was indicted by a grand jury in October for first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.

O’Connell dropped his extradition fight in December.

It is unclear when O’Connell will be brought to trial due to limitations on in-person court hearings caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
