Allen Mincey reports: Fifteen communities, including Charleston, are receiving grants from the Boyd Foundation’s Dog Park Dash to construct dog parks in their cities.

Charleston will receive the $25,000 grant from the Boyd Foundation, along with four other East Tennessee communities (Decatur, East Ridge/Chattanooga, Gatlinburg and Sweetwater). Another East Tennessee community — Johnson City — will receive the $100,000 grand prize from the foundation.

Announcement of the grants was made by the Boyd Foundation Friday afternoon.

The Charleston Recreation Board has been working on the Dog Park Dash grant since March 1, and submitted their application by the April 15 deadline. The board has been waiting on word on the grant for several weeks.

The dog park in Charleston will be on property owned by the city — a grant stipulation — near the Charleston ballpark. Mayor Donna McDermott said that with the property already designated for the dog park and cleared for that purpose, she would think   the park might become a reality by August.
