Topping our news today…

After nine days of early voting, Bradley Countians are continuing to pace ahead of the comparable election four years ago. The Bradley County Election Commission told WCLE news last night that 5,635 people have taken advantage of early voting, 495 Thursday. That is nearly 1,000 more people than the comparable election in 2014 at this point. Early voting continues today and will round out the week tomorrow, at Bradley Square Mall, Food City on McGrady Drive, and the Bradley County Election Commission office.

Also in news today…

Bradley County Sheriff Office’s deputies and detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with (9) nine auto burglaries in the Ridgewood subdivision located in the northwestern part of Bradley County.

Within 36 hours of the reported burglaries, evidence collected from multiple scenes resulted in detectives arresting Joseph Lee Osterlund, age 19, of Cleveland, for his involvement.

Osterlund faces the following criminal charges: (9) counts of Auto Burglary and (3) counts of Theft under $1,000.

Osterlund is still being held in the Bradley County Jail on a $46,000 appearance bond set by Bradley County General Sessions Criminal Court.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

The Bradley County Board of Education began formal discussion of the school district’s proposed 2018-19 budget during a work session Tuesday.

The board is considering a budget which would fund employees’ step raises, as well as a 2 percent pay raise for all salaried employees.

Bradley County Schools Finance Director Susan Willcutt and accounting specialist Ellen Smith gave the board a budget presentation focused on several changes.

Among these changes is adjusting the pay scale for teachers in years zero through five, with a bachelor’s degree only, so it is “equal to or above surrounding districts when considering insurance benefits as part of that calculation.”

The coming year’s budget will also continue to cover 100 percent of employees’ single-person health insurance coverage, Willcutt said, in spite of there being a 5 percent increase in insurance costs for the coming year.

The coming year’s budget will officially include pay for the two armed guards now stationed outside Bradley Central High School. The guards, procured through the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, were put in place in recent months amid school security concerns.

The budget will also include pay for six part-time bus monitors for special education students, as well as funds to purchase a used bus for the district.

The board plans to take a closer look at the budget during its next voting session, which is scheduled for May 10.
