From NewsChannel 9: A fire on a ridge in Polk County near Turtletown is keeping firefighters and the Tennessee Division of Forestry busy Tuesday morning.

 

The Polk County 911 Emergency Communication District says the fire spans about 50 acres, and is 20 percent contained.

The fire is happening on a ridge between McJunkin Road and New Stansbury Road.

 

Tennessee’s statewide wildfire map says 9 personnel are on the scene working to contain the fire.

 

Right now, we’re unaware of any nearby homes that are threatened, but we’ll keep you posted.

 

This is the latest in a string of wildfires helped in part by extreme drought conditions throughout our viewing area.

 

There’s a massive fire that continues to burn in Cherokee County, North Carolina, near Andrews. As of Tuesday morning, it spanned more than 2100 acres, and is 0 percent contained.

 

There’s also a fire in the Pockett Wilderness in Rhea County. It’s still considered ‘active’ as of Tuesday morning at 260 acres, but the fire is now 90 percent contained.

 

And early Tuesday a fire broke out in Catoosa County that had firefighters concerned about falling trees near some homes.

 

 

Outdoor burning is banned in most communities in our viewing area, including in Hamilton County. Authorities ask everyone to refrain from burning anything outdoors until conditions improve.
