The Cleveland City Council met yesterday.

City Manager Joe Fivas informed the Council that the City budget for the new fiscal year will not include any property tax increases.

The Council thanked the Master Gardeners group for the Flower Boxes in downtown Cleveland.

City employees Kristi Powers, Karen Stovall, and Lauran Duncan were recognized for 20 years of Service to the City of Cleveland.

Director of Schools for Cleveland City Schools, Jeff Elliot, discussed the growth of the school system and plans for the coming school year. He and members of the school board were at the meeting to request to move forward with the acquisition of land for a new school. Elliot told Council members that enrollment at some schools was above the maximum requiring multiple teachers in one classroom and other workarounds.

Elliot also announced that the Districtwide team will move into the building on Raider Drive soon.

The discussion also included the expansion of Candy’s Creek Cherokee Elementary to 6 additional classrooms.

The Council was given an update on the City’s Public Safety Cameras. In total, 70 cameras in 37 locations, including the greenway and various parks and public areas, have been placed. The city says they plan to expand the cameras to additional segments of the greenway.

The council voted on several rezoning and annexation requests for larger pieces of property. The first was a plan of service, annexation and rezoning about 87.5 acres, for property located at the corner of Michigan Avenue  Rd and Wilkinson Rd. The Council denied the plan of service, annexation, and rezoning request for the property.

The second was for consideration of a proposed plan of service for a requested annexation by referendum for about 57 acres of property located at Interchange Drive. The council passed the request unanimously.

The Council also passed rezoning requests for two pieces of property on Dry Valley Road, one 113 acres and one 160 acres of property.

The Council also appointed Councilwoman Marsha McKenzie to the Cleveland Utilities Authority for a term to expire on June 30, 2025.

The next City Council meeting will be held on Monday, June 24, 2024.
