The Cleveland City Council met yesterday and gave their approval for the formation of the Cleveland Utilities Authority.

This move will allow Cleveland Ultitlites to enter the broadband business.

According to officials, this will help Cleveland Utilities create a “Smart Grid” similar to EPB’s, in a third of the initial timeframe.

The project is a $72 million investment that includes $64 million for installing the fiber and $8 million for three years of operation for the new division.

The vote was 5-2, with Councilman Cassada and Vice Mayor Johnson voting no.

The City Council also passed 6-1 a Resolution for Payment-In-Lieu-Of-Taxes, better known as a PILOT agreement, for Duracell who is planning a $25 million expansion with the potential for new 25 jobs.

The Bradley Country Commission will also vote on a Resolution for a PILOT agreement with Duracell at its next voting session on April 17th. WCLE will keep you up-to-date.
