From the Cleveland Daily Banner: Frankie McCartney, one of three Charleston City Commissioners, died late Friday night from an accident at his home.

No official word on what led to his death has been released as of Saturday afternoon, though there have been some unconfirmed reports that McCartney was working on a car at his residence when the accident occurred.

Charleston Police Chief Jody Musselwhite did confirm the death, and that it happened sometime between 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.

Musselwhite also contacted both Charleston City Manager Caroline Geren and Charleston Mayor Donna McDermott around 3 a.m. to let them know of McCartney’s passing.

The three, along with Commissioner Tyler Dunn, will be meeting Tuesday evening at the commission’s regular monthly meeting, which may be rescheduled but has not yet been addressed.

McCartney, 40, has served on the city commission for several years, replacing Larry Anderson, who resigned over a decade ago.

McCartney had announced earlier this year that he would not run for reelection in 2024, but would remain active in Charleston events and activities.

McCartney leaves behind his wife, Bethany, and two children.

More information on the accident, on McCartney himself, as well as arrangements, will be provided in Tuesday’s print and online editions of the Cleveland Daily Banner.
