From Fox 17 in Nashville: Following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, last summer, Tennessee was among states with laws waiting to go into effect following the ruling. However, Abortion is once again becoming a focal point in the state. Two specific bills, filed before yesterday’s deadline to introduce new legislation, are getting attention.

Under bill, SB0857,  an abortion would not be a criminal offense if the pregnancy was caused by rape, rape of a child, or incest. In order to take place, the pregnant female would have to first report the rape to police or a rape crisis center.

Punishments could also be handed down to women who make false statements to obtain an abortion, punishable by no less than three years in jail with the requirement to serve the full sentence.

State Democrats have also introduced a bill that they say would protect reproductive healthcare decisions as a “fundamental right” and therefore strike down the current state law banning abortions.

We will keep you up to date as these bills move through both the House and Senate.
