The Bradley County School Board met last night.

Director of Schools, Dr. Linda Cash, announced that Bradley County Schools will dismiss early on Monday, April 8, because of a solar eclipse and safety concerns. 90% of sun will be obscured. Elementary schools will dismiss at 11 a.m., and middle and high schools will dismiss at 11:30 a.m.

School Board Attorney, Scott Bennett, proposed an agreement between the county school district and Frantz Law Group, which is organizing a campaign against some social media outlets targeting students through advertising campaigns. The board voted to to consider the litigation and noted their intention was not about winning recovery money in the lawsuit, but rather to help set guard rails for social media companies and advertising to children.

3rd District School Board Member, Teddy Bryson, was appointed to the Capital Outlay Committee. Board Chairman, Vicki Beaty, will also serve on the committee.

Several Budget Amendments were passed by the board that will allow the school board to fund several projects from the system’s budget and reserves. Those projects included: The OMS CDC and Special Ed Suite Project and a science wing for Bradley Central High School.

The board also granted Dr. Linda Cash the authority to approach the County Commission for funding Phase 1 of Hopewell Elementary Achiol’s expansion and track addition and repairs to the track at Bradley Central High School.

First District Board Member, Nancy Casson, presented a letter in support of a piece of legislation making its way through the state legislature that would return some of the revenue collected during the process of recording a deed back to the county it was recorded in. Right now, the revenue is staying with the state. The bill would also allocate half of unencumbered revenue for school projects back to local systems.

Also during the meeting, it was discussed that schools will be closed next week, March 11-15, 2024 for spring break. Schools will also be closed for Good Friday on March 29th, 2024, and closed again on April 1st, for Parent-Teacher Conferences.
