The Bradley County Commission did not take long Monday night as its meeting lasted only 30 minutes and trash was the dominant subject of their work session.

Commissioner Mike Hughes said he had been working with BCSO Environmental Officer Tim Mason on an unspecified issue.

That brought Mayor D. Gary Davis into the conversation.

Davis said he had actually called Mason about an issue last week, not knowing the officer was on vacation.

“His crew got a garbage place cleaned up while he was out of town,” Davis said.

“This is starting to happen more and more,” the mayor continued. “People are starting to put garbage on the side of the road.”

“We are not the city,” Davis emphasized. “We do not have roadside pickup. We need to remind people of that.”

The mayor said Mason needs to continue the cleanups as sites are found “and we need to start charging the property owners.”

He said the more these sites are cleaned up “the more people are going to start getting the idea we do this.”

“Officer Mason is not the garbage service,” Davis said. “He needs to pick it up and hopefully start charging people.’

We are learning more about a North Georgia plane crash that killed 4 people July 1.

The NTSB released a preliminary report on the crash Tuesday morning. The plane was headed from Tuskegee, Alabama to an airport in McMinn County when it went down, killing two children and their grandparents.

According to the report, problems likely began before the plane took off. The pilot could not get the engines to start, but declined an offer from a technician to help. The report shows the pilot chalked the problem up to heat. After charging the plane’s batteries for a few hours the plane was able to take off, but crashed roughly 200 miles later.

According to the NTSB report, the pilot was not receiving radar services. He was also not communicating with air traffic control during the flight or when the crash happened. When the plane hit a thunderstorm and all contact was lost.

The pilot, Dexter Lee Gresham, was not instrument rated, meaning he did not have the training required to fly in poor visibility.

This the preliminary report, so some information could change.

The NTSB will release a final report once the investigation is complete.
