Bradley County Sheriff-elect Steve Lawson announced yesterday his command staff appointments to become effective when he takes office on September 1st. His command staff will assist him in the day-to-day operations of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.
Cassandra Stone has been appointed as Director of Finance. She has 14 years at the sheriff’s office and has worked with Steve Lawson since 2006.
Lewis Jones has been appointed as the Director of Administrations, a 33-year veteran. He started law enforcement in the Cleveland Police Department and worked his way up. He wants to make the next four years the best at the department, and plans to avoid micromanaging those who work at the department.
Gabe Thomas has been appointed as Captain of Corrections. He is a 20-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, having worked there since 1998.
John Stone has been appointed as Captain of Criminal Investigation. He was in the SRO program and has had formal FBI training courses.
Allen Walsh has been appointed as Captain of Support Services. He has known Sheriff-elect Lawson for 34 years.
Bill Dyer has been appointed as Captain of Judicial Services.
John Collins has been appointed as Captain of Patrol. He holds a degree in criminal justice. He is well respected in the area law enforcement community, and has worked with both Cleveland and Bradley County law enforcement. He has also attended the FBI academy.
Brian Smith was appointed Chief Deputy. He started in 1980, and has also worked as a Bradley County Commissioner.
Sheriff-elect Lawson stated a lot of thought went into this command staff, and that we need to fix school and church security. He said as a county, we will improve corrections as well as officer safety.

The duties, responsibilities and authority of the Bradley County Commission’s chairperson will remain unchanged following a vote by commissioners on Monday night.
While nothing will change, there was lengthy discussion and two votes before reaching that decision.
The discussion centered around a proposed resolution amending the commission’s Rules of Procedure regarding the chairperson. The issue had been discussed in July during a meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee, with a proposed change to Rule 12 to add a new Section K related to the chairperson serving as an ex-officio non-voting member of all internal standing committees.
The next vote was to approve the resolution as written, making the chairperson an ex officio member of every committee. That vote failed 5-9.
After all the discussion, the decision of the commissioners was to make no change in the commission’s rules of procedure regarding the chairperson.

The road rage case of Chattanooga radio host Jeff Styles was bound over to the grand jury Tuesday morning.
Styles testified Tuesday morning in a preliminary hearing in Judge Gary Starnes’ courtroom. Nickolas Bullington, who was also involved in the June 15 road rage incident, also testified.
Starnes felt there was sufficient evidence to send the case to a grand jury.
Long-time Chattanooga radio personality Jeff Styles was arrested for aggravated assault and vandalism in connection with a June “road rage” incident.

Chattanooga police say that a woman who was fatally struck crossing Shallowford Road Tuesday morning was walking against the pedestrian signals.
The accident happened about 6:44am, according to police, in low light conditions.
The driver was going through the intersection with an active green light, when he saw the woman, swerved left and braked in an effort to stop.
The woman was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to police.
