‘We ask for patience:’ 2 boat launches at Lake Ocoee closed through Memorial Day weekend

From NewChannel 9: Contractors with the Cherokee National Forest continue repair work on Parksville and East Parksville boat launches on the Ocoee

From NewChannel 9: Contractors with the Cherokee National Forest continue repair work on Parksville and East Parksville boat launches on the Ocoee Ranger District.

Both boat launches will remain closed over the Memorial Day weekend, according to the USDA.

“We are working hard on improvements and repairs to Parksville and East Parksville Boat Ramps including new, wider boat launches, new stairs, accessible walkways, courtesy docks and improved parking,” said Philip Earhart, Ocoee district ranger. “A lot of great work has been accomplished and there is still more that needs to be done. There is never a perfect time to disrupt access and we ask the public to have patience and use this as an opportunity to explore a new and exciting place on the forest while we improve access and facilities that can be enjoyed for years to come.”

The Forest Service says it explored options to make Parksville and East Parksville boat launches temporarily available for the upcoming holiday weekend, but both sites are still considered construction zones with multiple public safety hazards.

A release says after thorough review, both boat launches will remain closed until repair work is completed. The projected completion date for both launches is now in July. Repair work on restroom facilities, courtesy docks and paving are still ongoing.

Due to the expected levels of use and current lack of capacity at our boat launches on Parksville Lake, the Forest Service advises the public to explore other reservoirs and rivers in the area over the busy holiday weekend.

If you’re visiting Kings Slough boat launch this weekend, plan accordingly to maximize the chances of finding a parking spot.
