In news today…

Cleveland began a new greenway section Wednesday with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Casteel Connector.

The connector is named for former City Manager Janice Casteel. She was present with her family as city, county and greenway officials helped launch the new Cleveland/Bradley County Greenway feature.

The connector will link the North Ocoee Street sidewalk system to Tinsley Park, and merge with the existing greenway at the pedestrian bridge that crosses Mouse Creek in the park.

Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland thanked Mrs. Casteel for her service to the city.

To Mrs. Casteel, Mayor Rowland said “thank you for what you have meant to the city. This connector is going to remind us every day what you still mean to the city.”

Mrs. Casteel introduced her family. She also thanked her “city family” and “county family” present for the ceremony including City Council and County Commission members. She thanked the city and the Tennessee Department of Transportation for funding the connector.

The greenway, she said, “is one of our greatest assets for all our people.”

From News Channel 9…

Bradley County Lieutenant deputy Russ Henry says the sheriff’s department’s new toy is something they need.

Tennessee law requires any child in a car that is shorter than 4 feet, 9 inches or younger than 8 years old use a booster seat. Deputies say they often respond to calls involving children that young, but because their squad cars aren’t equipped with booster seats, they are forced to wait for someone to bring them one.

“It could take 30 minutes to an hour,” said Henry. “That’s an additional period that the child could be out of the area.”

To solve that issue, the department received a donation from Larry Hill Ford allowing them to buy 10 of Mifold chairs. Instead of “boosting” a child, this seat actually adjusts the seat belt to accommodate their size.

Something deputies say will come in handy.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Anyone may fish for free without a license in Tennessee’s public waters this Saturday, during the 2017 Free Fishing Day.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency provides the annual free day in hopes of increasing interest in fishing. The day allows anyone the opportunity to try this great outdoor sport, especially children to celebrate fishing as a wholesome and healthy recreational option.

In addition, children ages 15 and younger may fish without a license beginning on Free Fishing Day through the following Friday (June 16).

Free Fishing Day and Week apply to Tennessee’s public waters, TWRA owned and operated lakes, and state park facilities. Some privately owned pay lakes and ponds continue to charge during this special day and week. Anglers will need to consult with those operators if there are any questions about a particular facility.
