From NewsChannel 9: Three people including two minors have died and 11 others were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle crash that closed down Interstate 40 East in Putnam County for hours on Saturday.

According to Putnam County EMS, the crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. at mile marker 291 on I-40 East.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) told WKRN the “fatal/multiple injury crash” involved a minivan with 11 people inside, as well as a car with three people inside.

THP said one vehicle apparently changed lanes, “encroaching” on another vehicle before the crash.

Putnam County EMS said two minors and one adult were killed in the crash, five people were flown to the Vanderbilt University Hospital emergency room, and six people were transported via ambulance to the Cookeville Regional Medical Center emergency room.

Besides Putnam County EMS, THP, and TDOT, officials said members of Hancock County EMS, Putnam County Rescue Squad, the Putnam County Fire Department, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, and the Putnam County Emergency Management Agency responded to the incident.

Since so many agencies were called to the scene of the crash, White County EMS, Cumberland County EMS, Overton County EMS, and Jackson County EMS were asked to respond to Putnam County if any assistance was needed.

The crash is under investigation by THP according to WKRN.
