From Local 3 News: Tennessee lawmakers are one step closer to ending the state’s grocery tax as a bill to do so advanced on Tuesday.
The bill would prohibit state and local governments from taxing groceries.
Some lawmakers say they want to lift some of the financial burden families face.
The bill passed the house of government operations committee and will advance to the house Senate Finance, Ways, & Means Committee with a negative recommendation.
Representative Aftyn Behn and Senator Charlane Oliver are sponsoring the bill.
The current Tennessee sales tax on food is 4%.
