From Fox 17 in Nashville: The Tennessee Department of Education has approved nearly 7,000 online forms appealing test results from the 2023 TCAP exam as thousands of third graders face retention — and there’s still two weeks left to appeal.

State data shows TDOE has received 9,205 forms that represent 8,206 third-grade students. The state approved 6,698 of those forms.

As of this week, 642 appeals have been denied, while 434 are still processing. At least 432 appeal forms submitted to the state weren’t applicable “due to student eligibility.”

This comes after the state released data showing 60% of third graders were at risk of retention based on their scores. A new law says students scoring below “proficient” on the test must attend summer school, tutoring, or re-take the test in order to be promoted to the fourth grade.

Some Tennessee parents told FOX 17 News they’re “outraged” since their child will have to either attend summer school or repeat the third grade.

The window to appeal began May 30 and ends June 30. Click here to begin the process.
