From NewsChannel 9: A 47-year-old man from Decatur, Tennessee drowned in the Gulf of Mexico while trying to save his girlfriend last week.

The City of Panama City Beach says the drowning took place on June 22nd behind the Flamingo Motel.

Arriving officers found a lifeguard saving a woman from the Gulf waters.

Police learned the woman’s boyfriend, 47-year-old Christopher Bell, had tried to save her but could not be found.

Bystanders later found Bell’s body floating in the water and pulled him to shore but he was found unresponsive and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities tell our Nashville sister station FOX 17 News this happened while the waters were considered hazardous.

“The conditions at the time were severe, with double red flags indicating extreme water hazards,’ Panama City Beach Director of Communications Debbie Ingram. ‘We implore the public to always heed these warnings and be aware of the grave dangers that can accompany these conditions. Double-red flag conditions have existed on the beach for the last week.”
